Past events in yesteryear

Summer League - Draft Night

Yes ladies and gents, on 25 April 2008, the draft for the Summer League will be conducted in public for the second year running. In the confines of Delaneys Wanchai, team captains will go through a draft process to select over 100 players to play on any of the 7 league teams. Beforehand, players will be graded according to ability and availability, then the captains will go through each grade in no particular order - so it wont be like the schoolyard again. We welcome all members on the evening to watch the selections unfold.

Westathon

Buckshot !

Yet another inaugural event for the HKGAA. The club that brings new events by the bucket load every week. Some ask, how do we do it? Well, 8 pints of cider and a few surrealists, and some fella from Fermanagh would probably do the trick. On this occasion, we're holding an All Day Westathon. A what? Western movies from breakfast to dinner, come as you like at any time, but do dress up or forget to shave. Movies to include, The Good The Bad & The UGly, The Outlaw Jose Wales, Blazing Saddles and Bad Santa.

Did you know that Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il, the proper name for the Good the Bad and the Ugly, was first released in Hong Kong. John Carney once watched the movie 4 times in one day, whilst drinking 39 cans of Fosters Export. We'll provide details of dates and location soon.

Music Table Quiz

This HKGAA's first ever music quiz was held in Delaneys upstairs on Saturday 3rd March - the event was a massive success and a huge thanks to the quiz host and organiser Ryan Harper. We raised over HK$21,000 for Enlighten Hong Kong - raising awareness of epilepsy in Hong Kong. And lastly well done to all for turning up and the performers, sexy dancers, singers, song-writers who made the whole club sing and last but not least Delaneys, Claire and all the crew down there.

St Patrick's Society Ball

Revellers at the Ball

A great evening was had by all at the St Pats Ball, held this year at the Grand Hyatt. Over 100 club members attended the evening, with a few even returning from overseas. Congrats to Noel Smyth and the St Pats committee on a great evening.

If that was good, anyone who was at Delaneys on the following Saturday, St Patricks Day, would have experienced one of the finest trad sessions ever held in HK. Gasra, consisting of the spell binding Edel Fox (squeezebox) together with Ronan O Flaherty (fiddle), Ryan McGiver (guitar), Jonny Harty (banjo) and Derek Mullen (guitar), are one of the finest young trad music ensembles to come out of Ireland - anyone who saw their blazing six hour set on Saturday, would testify to that. Here's hoping they'll be back.

Ireland Trophy - Happy Valley

Scene from Happy Valley

The Ireland Cup is an annual Group 3 race hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. With over $400,000 to the first place it's the biggest event on the Happy Valley card that evening. The Ireland Cup was first run in January 2005 to mark the visit of the Vodafone Football All Stars to Hong Kong. It has since been reserved to coincide with the St Patrick's week of celebrations.

A great night was had by all who attended - close to 70 - although not much was won until the last race of the evening, the Ireland Trophy - when most present lashed their money on the two Irish horses running - one by the name of Pocket Money ridden by Dougie Whyte - unfortunately he got 2nd, the other Irish horse coming first - Thousands were paid out, and most went away with a smug look at the end of the evening....

Scene of the Puc Fada - mad ?

Puc Fada - Lan Kwai Fong

With Croke Park, the home of Gaelic Games in Ireland, recently hosting the first "foreign sport" ever to be played there, the Gaelic Athletic Association ("GAA") broke new ground following over a hundred years of steep tradition. In the aftermath of this historic occasion and the unprecedented coverage from the world's media, the GAA and gaelic games is no longer one of Ireland's best kept secrets. On Thursday 15th March 2007, the GAA in the form of the Hong Kong GAA will again create history by participating in the first ever puc-fada competition ever to be held in Lan Kwai Fong in the lead up to Ireland's national day of celebration, St Partick's Day. The puc fada is a skills game that is derived from hurling, Ireland's national game and described by many as the fastest field sport in the world. Using a thick stick about a metre long and made out of ash wood, competitors will attempt to hit a target from over 30 metres away using a sliothar (ball) in Lan Kwai Fong. The concept of playing the competition in Lan Kwai Fong may be considered zany by many, but what would you expect when the Lan Kwai Fong Group hosts an Irish celebration. To many who have lived in New York, the concept is not too unlike stick ball that is regularly played during Summer time on Wall Street.
